When I first starting photographing professionally (i.e. in exchange for money!), I mostly shots bands and musicians. At that point, I was obsessed with Linda Eastman and had probably poured through her book THE SIXTIES hundreds and hundreds of times. There is something so iconic about her images and after studying them so many times, I wanted to try and really learn how to connect with my subjects the way that she did with hers. And at the time, most of the bands were made up of my friends, so that wasn't necessarily difficult. It often became more about getting them to let their guard down and just be themselves in front of the camera... and not just a persona they were trying to project.
And this is why I think some of my favorite images that I have shot have been bands... while it can be challenging wrangling a larger group, it's also rewarding when the images play out the way I had them planned in my head. And it can be really inspiring just meeting with the band before the shoot and talking about what they have in mind, listening to their music and trying to tie it all together with my images.
I don't shoot bands near as often as I used to, so when Fiffin Market contacted me, I have to admit that I felt anxious and nervous at first. But when we sat down and talked about their vision over coffee, I couldn't help but get excited and feel inspired.
